Kaizen- Meet the 2012 BBB Vendors!

Put your sunglasses on to peep at this bright crafty star who is coming to the BBB winter fair! It is my pleasure to introduce Muffy Brandt of Kaizen!

Kaizen

First things first: What’s your name, what’s your business name, where are you from, and where are you currently located/crafting?

Hi! My name is Muffy, my business is named Kaizen by Muffy Brandt and is based in Providence, Rhode Island.

How did you get your start? Please tell us a little bit about how your business went from an idea to what is is today.

I have been a lifelong crafter and maker of artwork in many mediums. I moved to New England from Pittsburgh, PA in 1999 to attend the Rhode Island School of Design.

I fell in love with the region and rich community of creative people in Providence. Combining my love of crafting, skills from RISD, and supportive peers I began making tote bags from upcycled sail material that I sold at Farmer’s Markets.

I have always loved flamboyant dress and costume, and when I am not crafting participate in music and dance performance projects. Expanding my business to online took me from Farmer’s Markets to a new audience where I can make neon clothes to my heart’s desire.

What inspires you the most to create?

I am inspired to create all of the time! Well, I am fortunate to share an extraordinary studio called the Dirt Palace with 6 other female artists who work in a variety of visual and performance art mediums. There is a richness of creativity in the air that is infectious.

What are your favorite materials to work with?

I love fabrics, fabric dye, silk screen, studs, and denim.

Do you have a favorite color palette?

While I love so many color palettes I would have to be honest and admit that I gravitate to neons in my designs, though I am trying to explore pastels and rich hues.

Who are some of your favorite indie artist/crafters and why do you love them?

Oh I love Jeanine Bressner’s glasswork, Debbie Tuch’s Glitterlimes, Joe Segal’s Kitty creations!

Any exciting future plans or developments in the works for your business? (Nothing TOP-SECRET, of course!)

I recently began making kid’s leggings and onesies which are a lot of fun. I am hoping to evolve to printing my own yardage and sewing my garments from scratch!

What are some other things you like to do when you are not busy making awesome stuff?

I have a film degree from RISD, I love watching movies, going to the outdoors and stopping on the way home for something delicious, and taking classes in new skills ( I just took a wax casting for jewelry course.)

What are the top 3 reasons someone shopping at the BBB 2012 should be sure to stop by your table?

My things are colorful and bright, my friend Jamie and I will be all smiles, I have items from newborn to XL Adult!

What is your favorite background noise to listen to while working?

I love audio books about musicians and comedians, and radio lab, This American Life, etc!

Where do you (craft) work?

In my studio in Providence, RI.

What is your favorite mythical beast and what do you think their favorite crafty past time is?

I like the three headed dog Cerberus a lot, I imagine something crafty that utilizes multitasking!

Thanks Muffy! See you soon!
